“There were strong references to the 1950s in the S/S 12 shows, both in the fashion and the faces. While the look below gives a nod to the decade, it’s more of a modern interpretation than a literal one. This ’50s makeup look is fashion forward, feminine and gorgeously glam. The dewy complexion is one of its main features. I drew inspiration from shows like Nina Ricci, Rochas, Stella McCartney, Valentino, Chloe, Jil Sander, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Versus, where dreamy, lunar-skinned ladies sashayed down the runway. Bouffant-style hairdos are also big this season (as seen on the catwalk at Fendi and Jil Sander). That’s definitely a cue to dust off your volumizing products and bust out a bit of backcombing action!” LMM, 2012.

“The most common request I get from brides-to-be is “make me look natural, glowing and gorgeous”. To achieve this, I typically begin by perfecting the skin with a primer and a long-lasting, light-reflecting base. I have been using Lancôme’s Teint Miracle Foundation a lot recently, it is beautiful and, best of all, looks like real skin. I then pair softly-defined eyes with long, fluttery lashes, and apply a natural, but kissable-looking, color to the lip. To finish, I brush on some blush. I’m a big fan of Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks, it imparts just the right amount of color, and leaves the face looking fresh and perfectly flushed. The Glitter Lips look was inspired by the Givenchy Ready-to-Wear Autumn/Winter 2010–11 fashion show. The models made a statement on the catwalk with their edgy outfits and sparkly red mouths.

This look has a distinctive party vibe about it, which makes it perfect for Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve!

The instructions!

1. To help your lip makeup last longer, begin by blending a small amount of concealer or foundation over the edge of your lips with your fingertip.

2. To create a sharp lip contour and prevent your lipstick bleeding, outline your lips with a lip pencil. Start in the middle of the top lip, and using small, short strokes, work outward to the corners. Then, using the same technique described above, line the lower lip.

3. For a precise application, paint on your lipstick with a lip brush. Applying lipstick with a lip brush, as opposed to directly from the bullet, gives you greater control along the curves of the lips. Accuracy is important when you are using bright/dark pigments, because they are not as forgiving as natural shades and flaws are more obvious.

4. It’s glitter o’clock!

(a) Decant some glitter glue onto a mixing tray (or similar).

(b) Immerse the tip of an art brush in the glitter glue.

(d) Press the brush over the surface of your lips to deposit the glitter.

(e) Repeat steps (b) to (d) until you achieve the desired effect.

Take care not to apply the glitter too far inside the mouth or it will end up on your teeth. To remove any excess, put your thumb in your mouth, suck it gently and slowly pull it out.

5. It’s party time! For maximum impact, pair the glitter lip with a neutral eye.

This look was inspired by the Blumarine Ready-to-Wear A/W 2010/11 fashion show.

The mood in Milan was dark and dramatic, rock ’n’ roll vibes filled the air, and models wearing graphic animal prints wowed the crowd.

The makeup was strong and sexy. Classic black smokey eyes, underpinned with tones of cranberry, were offset by light, understated lips.

A). Pre-makeup.

Pluck your eyebrows and prepare your skin by cleansing⁽¹⁾ and moisturizing⁽²⁾.

B). Foundation.

Apply a dewy foundation⁽³⁾ to the center of your face with a foundation brush⁽⁴⁾; then, for a natural finish, blend it outwards with your fingertips.

C). Concealer.

To even out your skin tone, take some concealer⁽⁵⁾ on a concealer brush⁽⁶⁾ and apply it beneath the eye, over the eyelid, around the nostrils and onto any spots and blemishes; then blend by pressing it into the skin with your fingertip.

D). Eyeshadow.

Main color.

Pick up a dark-green, gold-flecked eyeshadow⁽⁷⁾ on an eye shading brush⁽⁸⁾ and block it over the top lid. For an intense application of color, begin at the upper lashline and work it up into the socket line using a repetitive up-and-down patting motion. Then take a blending brush⁽⁹⁾, and using back and forth strokes and circular motions, blend the shadow over the lid, through the crease and up onto the lower brow bone. To give the eye a rounded shape at the outer corner, follow the natural curve of the eye socket. Next, using a pencil brush⁽¹⁰⁾, take the shadow beneath the eye and line the lower lashes. To smooth and soften the finish, blend over the line with an angled blending brush⁽¹¹⁾.

Makeup artist tip! Don’t let fall-out from your eyeshadow ruin your foundation. Hold a folded tissue below the eye with your free hand to prevent any particles falling onto the face. Another way to keep your makeup base smudge-free, is to apply your eyeshadow first. After you have applied your shadow, cleanly remove any fall-out from the cheek area before you follow up with foundation.

Highlight.

To give your eye that ‘just caught the light’ look, apply a touch of metallic gold shadow⁽¹²⁾ to the middle of the eyelid with a flat brush⁽¹³⁾.

Makeup artist tip! To get the highlight right, open your eye, look straight ahead into a mirror and locate your iris (the colored part of the eye). Then close your eye and apply the shadow to the center of the lid directly over the iris.

E). Eyelashes.

Curl your top eyelashes with an eyelash curler⁽¹⁴⁾ and then take a full-strip false lash⁽¹⁵⁾ and measure it against your lashline; if necessary, trim it to fit. Next, holding the lash with tweezers⁽¹⁶⁾, apply some adhesive⁽¹⁷⁾ to the spine with an orange stick (or similar tool); then wait a few minutes for the glue to become tacky. Using the tweezers and your fingers, guide the lash into place. Adhere it to the inner corner of the eye first, and push the spine against the roots of your natural lashes. When you have it positioned correctly, work outwards along the length of the eye, ensuring the lash is attached as close to the edge of your eyelid as possible. To ensure the lash is fastened securely, hold it in place for 20 seconds and then remove any excess adhesive with tweezers⁽¹⁶⁾.

Makeup artist tip! Trimming trap! Before snipping your strip lash to size, examine it. To mimic natural lashes, most strips have shorter lashes on one end and longer lashes on the other. Never trim the short end, as these lashes line up with the inner corner of your eye; always cut from the long end for the best fit.

F). Mascara.

To open up the eye, apply a black lengthening mascara⁽¹⁸⁾ to the bottom lashes.

Makeup artist tip! Normally I apply mascara to the top lashes too (so the falsies and natural lashes merge together seamlessly), but not this time! Because I wanted the “cobweb” design to take center stage, I left the upper lashes mascara free.

G). Eyeliner.

For a fuller-looking lashline, take some gel eyeliner⁽¹⁹⁾ on an eyeliner brush⁽²⁰⁾ and paint it along the roots of the upper lashes.

Makeup artist tip! Some lashes (including these ones) have quite thick spines which double as eyeliner. So . . . you don’t have to line the whole lashline unless you want to. Simply fill in any gaps.

H). Eyebrow powder.

For well-manicured brows, pick up some brow powder⁽²¹⁾ on an angled brush⁽¹¹⁾and softly fill in any gaps in the hair growth; then brush the brows upwards with a brow comb⁽²²⁾.

I). Face powder.

To set your base, sweep some face powder⁽²³⁾ over the whole face with a large powder brush⁽²⁴⁾.

J). Lipstick.

For a stained-looking lip, concentrate the color in the center and feather it out toward the corners. To achieve this, roughly apply a satin-textured, red-based lipstick⁽²⁵⁾ to the middle of your lips with a lip brush⁽²⁶⁾; then, pat it in with the pad of your finger. If too much color moves beyond the lip line, use a clean fingertip to neaten the edges.

K). Blush.

To add a soft hue to the cheek⁽²⁷⁾, pick up a neutral beige powder blush on a powder brush⁽²⁴⁾ and blend it under the cheekbone.

L). Spider.

Take some black gel liner⁽¹⁹⁾ on a fine-tipped brush⁽²⁰⁾ and draw a little spider on the top of your cheekbone (just beneath the outer corner of your eye). Then, to make the spider sparkle, take some glitter glue⁽²⁸⁾ and black glitter⁽²⁹⁾ on an art brush⁽³⁰⁾ and apply it over the head and body. As a finishing touch, attach two self-adhering red crystals⁽³¹⁾ with tweezers⁽¹⁶⁾ for eyes.

Makeup artist tip! Why stop at one? For extra effect, paint on a whole family of spiders!

M). Nail polish.

For on-theme talons, splash a dark lacquer⁽³²⁾ on your fingernails.

To complete the look, dress in black and don a witch’s hat.

Think Pink – flattering face makeup for older women!

Preparation.

1). Cleanse, tone and moisturize^(a) your face.

Pre-base.

2). To create an even canvas, apply a light-diffusing primer^(b)to your skin prior to your foundation. Begin in the middle of the face and, using your fingertips, blend outwards toward the hair- and jaw-lines.

Why use a primer underneath your foundation? It will help your foundation last longer, make application easier, and refine the skin’s texture so imperfections (including fine lines and wrinkles) are less noticeable.

Foundation.

3). To achieve a flawless complexion, apply a semi-matte foundation^(c) to the face and eye area with a foundation brush^(d), and then work it into the skin with your fingertips. For an even application, start in the center of the face and, using short strokes, blend outward and downward.

Concealer.

4). To lighten and brighten the eye area, mix a concealer^(e) with a highlighter pen^(f), and apply it beneath the eye and onto the eyelid with a concealer brush^(g). Then, for optimal coverage and a seamless finish, pat it into the skin with your fingertip.

Makeup artist tip! Does your concealer emphasize the lines around your eyes? Are you sick of it caking and leaving your under-eye area looking crêpey? Want a quick fix? Mix your concealer and highlighter pen together before you apply it. The result? A perfectly textured product which disguises dark circles and imparts radiance – but doesn’t accentuate fine lines and furrows.

Eyeshadow.

Base.

5). Using back and forth strokes, blend a creamy beige matte eyeshadow^(h)over the eyelid and up onto the brow bone with an eye blending brush⁽ⁱ⁾.

Wash of color.

6). Pick up a light-brown satin eyeshadow^(j) on an eye shader brush^(k) and, beginning at the top lashline, press it over the lid and up into the crease. For a sheer and shapely finish, blend the shadow backwards and forwards over the lid and round-and-round through the socket line with a blending brush^{(i + l)}. If required, add more shadow and keep blending it out until you achieve the desired intensity. Then, using a pencil brush^(m), take the shadow^(j) beneath the eye and work it along the lower lashline.

Makeup artist tip! Mature woman should avoid heavily frosted and highly-pearlized eyeshadows because they tend to draw attention to fine lines and wrinkles in the eye area. Matte and satin textures are typically much more flattering for older faces.

Eyeliner.

7). To define the eye, take some brown gel eyeliner⁽ⁿ⁾ on an eyeliner brush^(o),and using a series of short, overlapping strokes line the upper lashes. To perfect and smooth the line, blend over it with the brush^(o).

Makeup artist tip! If you have gray or light-colored hair and a pale complexion, black eyeliner can sometimes look too harsh. For a more natural look, opt for gray, navy or brown liner, and don’t be scared to smudge the line for a more soft-focus effect.

Mascara.

8). For longer-looking top lashes, curl them with an eyelash curler^(p)and apply a black lengthening mascara^(q).To make your eyes appear bigger, slick some mascara over the bottom lashes too.

Powder.

9). To set your foundation and give the skin a subtle radiance, take some loose finishing powder^(r) on a powder brush^(s),and blend it over the face using circular motions.

Brow Pencil.

10). To contour the brows, softly fill in any gaps with a brow pencil^(t). For a natural effect, warm the pencil on the back of your hand first, and then use short, feathery strokes to apply it. For a polished and groomed finish, comb your brows upward with a brush^(t).

Lip Color.

11). For a precise and understated pout, choose a lipstick in a natural shade^(u) and apply it with a lip brush^(v). Or, be bold and pick a high-impact hue^(w).

Makeup artist tip! If your mouth is deeply lined, avoid dark colors and glossy formulations because they are prone to bleeding. Instead, choose more neutral tones in matte or satin textures and use a lipliner to minimize movement.

Blush.

Chic and understated makeup is ultra modern. To look fresh, young and natural, create a flawless complexion with foundation and concealer, and then sweep neutral tones around the eye. Finish the look with a flick of black mascara, a lick of natural lip color and a flattering flush of blush.

PREPARATION.

1). Cleanse, tone and moisturize^(a) your skin.

FOUNDATION.

2). To even out your skin tone, apply a semi-matte foundation^(b) to your face and eye area with a foundation brush^(c); and for a natural finish, work it into the skin with your fingertips.

Makeup artist tip! If you have chosen the correct color, your foundation will blend into your skin. If your foundation is too light or pink, it will leave your complexion looking dull and gray. On the other hand, if your foundation is too dark, there will be a line of demarcation between your jaw and neck, and along the hairline.

CONCEALER.

Eyes

3). To lighten the eye area, mix a concealer^(d) with a highlighter pen^(e) and apply it over the eyelid and beneath the eye with a concealer brush^(f); then, blend by patting it into the skin with your fingertip.

Face

4). To camouflage any spots and blemishes, apply a high-coverage concealer^(g)to the affected areas with a concealer brush^(f), and to blend, press it over the skin with the pad of your finger.

POWDER.

5). To matte down the eyelid, take some matte, loose powder^(h)on a tapered blending brush⁽ⁱ⁾ and apply it to the eyelid.

Why powder the eyelid? A soft halo of color around the eye is one of this season’s statement trends. To create this washed-out effect, dust a layer of matte, loose powder over the eyelid before you apply your eyeshadow. This will dilute the intensity of the color and help you achieve a well-blended finish.

EYESHADOW.

6). First, to brighten the eye, apply a gold-tinged, light-beige, metallic eyeshadow^(j)to the eyelid and brow bone with a tapered blending brush⁽ⁱ⁾, and then sweep it beneath the eye and blend it along the lower lashes with an angled blending brush^(k). To make the eyes appear fresh and wide awake, concentrate the color toward the inner corner.

7). Second, to enhance the shape of the eye, pick up a soft-brown, shimmery shadow^(l) on a tapered blending brush⁽ⁱ⁾,and blend it over the eyelid and through the crease. Next, using an angled blending brush^(k), work the shadow across the bottom lashline. To define the outer corner of the eye, take a tapered blending brush⁽ⁱ⁾,and starting at the lower lashline, blend the shadow outward and upward along the natural curve of the eye socket. Blend back and forth to give the eye a softly rounded silhouette.

Makeup artist tip! The key to mastering neutral eyeshadow is to choose colors that work with your complexion. Light beiges and sheer golds work well on fair skins but can often leave darker complexions looking dusty. If you have dark skin, choose terracotta, bronze and deep yellow tones.

MASCARA.

8). To create the illusion of longer top lashes, curl them with an eyelash curler^(m). If you have difficult, uncooperative lashes, use a mini-eyelash curler⁽ⁿ⁾ for more control. Then, to make the eyes appear wider, coat both the top and bottom lashes with a lengthening mascara in black^(o).

EYEBROW COLOR.

9). To frame the eyes, take some brow color^(p) on a small angled brush^(q) and fill in any gaps using short, upward strokes.

POWDER.

10). To set your base, apply a matte, loose powder^(h) to the face with a powder brush^(r).

EYEBROW GEL.

11). For a polished and groomed look that will last, brush your brows upward and hold them in place with a clear brow gel^(s).

LIP COLOR.

12). For a neutral pout with staying power, apply a matte lip pencil^(t). Draw it on for a natural effect, or apply it with a lip brush^(u) for greater precision.

Makeup artist moment! Lipsticks are back in vogue. The lip color I used here looks like a pencil, lasts like a pencil, but goes on like a lipstick. The design gives a controlled application, and I love the way it cloaks the lip in a whisper of nothingness.

BLUSH/BRONZER.

13). For a contoured cheek, take a matte peach powder blush^(v) on a powder brush^(w) and apply it to the apples. Then, using the same brush, contour the underside of the cheekbone and the temples with a soft, shimmery bronze tone^(x). This will give contrast and dimension. To add a hint of color to the rest of the complexion, apply what’s left on the brush to the forehead, nose and chin.

INTRODUCING … Natural Beauty!

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE LOOK.

The “au naturel” look dominated the runway in the Spring/Summer 2010 fashion shows. In the Erdem, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Calvin Klein, Philip Lim and Donna Karan shows there was a strong “nude” theme. The models sported fresh skin, neutral eyelids, bare cheeks and lightly balmed lips. Jean-Paul Gaultier, Versace and Chanel continued the natural trend but opted for a more polished overall feel. The models stepped out looking sexy and sophisticated, with emphasized lashes, defined eyes, groomed brows, contoured cheeks and accentuated lips. This season’s key colors are brown, bronze, beige, taupe, nude-pink, soft peach and lilac.

BEFORE MAKEUP.

1). Tidy your brows by tweezing any stray hairs.

2). Cleanse, tone and moisturize^(a) your skin.

Makeup artist tip! Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè (24-Hour Miracle Cream)^(a) is one of my favorite pre-makeup moisturizers. For perfectly primed skin, simply massage a small amount over the face with your fingertips.

TINTED MOISTURIZER.

3). For a natural-looking complexion, apply a tinted moisturizer^(b) to your face and eyelids, and blend it into the skin with your fingertips.

CONCEALER.

4). To even out the skin tone in the eye area, take an under-eye concealer^(c) on a concealer brush^(d), and apply it beneath the eye and onto the eyelid. Then, for a well-blended finish, pat it into the skin with your fingertip.

5). To disguise any imperfections, apply a high-coverage concealer^(e) to any spots and blemishes with a concealer brush^(d). Then, for a natural finish, blend by pressing it into the skin with your fingertip.

HIGHLIGHTER.

6). To add luminosity to the face, apply a light-peach shimmer cream^(f) to the tops of the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and over the Cupid’s bow with the brush provided; then blend with your fingertip.

EYESHADOW.

7). To begin, apply a base shade. Using an eye-contouring brush^(g), blend a soft-brown, shimmery eyeshadow^(h)over the eyelid and through the crease. To elongate the eye, wing it out slightly at the outer corner.

8). Next, add shape and dimension. Pick up a medium-brown, shimmery eyeshadow⁽ⁱ⁾ on an eye-shading brush^(j), and beginning at the upper lashline, pat it over the lower part of the top eyelid. Work the shadow from the outer corner inward and follow the natural contour of the eye. Then, using a small, angled brush^(k), take the eyeshadow beneath the eye and line the bottom lashes. To soften the finish, blend over the line with an eye-contouring brush^(g).

9). To make the eye glisten, add a touch of shimmery white shadow^(l) to the inner corner and blend it part way along the lower lashline with an angled blending brush^(m).

EYELINER.

10). For soft definition, apply a gel-textured bronze eyeliner⁽ⁿ⁾ to the top and bottom lashlines and smudge it with an eye-contouring brush^(g). To add intensity to the lower lashline, pick up a medium-brown, shimmery eyeshadow⁽ⁱ⁾ on an eye-contouring brush^(g) and smooth it over the bronze liner until you achieve the desired depth of color.

11). To make the upper lashline darker and more defined, take a deep-brown cream liner^(o) on a small, angled brush^(k) and apply it to the roots of the lashes.

MASCARA.

12). To make your top lashes appear longer, curl them with an eyelash curler^(p). Then, to open up the eye, generously coat your upper and lower lashes with a black lengthening and volumizing mascara ^(q).

Makeup artist tip! This mascara^(q) rocks! It lengthens and thickens, and the wand is genius!

POWDER.

13). To set your base, dust on a matte translucent powder^(r) with a kabuki brush^(s).

Makeup artist tip! This brush^(s) is brilliant! It does a perfect job and is super soft on the skin. Try to avoid powdering the areas of the face that you highlighted earlier, otherwise you may need to repeat step 6.

14). To contour the face, sweep a mineral powder foundation^(t) over the cheekbones and up onto the temples with a complexion brush^(u).

Makeup artist tip! When contouring, select a color that is one shade darker than your skin tone and blend well.

LIPGLOSS.

15). For a deliciously juicy pout, apply a peach gloss^(v) with a lip brush^(w).

Makeup artist tip! If your lips are highly pigmented and throw pink or red undertones, it is often difficult to get a true color pay-off from a natural-colored gloss. Want a quick fix? After you have applied your lip color, dab some concealer^(e)over the top with your fingertip to knock down the color. This will lighten your lips by a shade or two and make the texture of the gloss creamier.

BLUSH.

16). For sculpted cheeks, pick up some shimmery bronzing powder^(x) on a blush brush^(y) and blend it under the cheekbone. Then, using the same brush, pick up a shimmery peach blush^(x) and apply it to the apples of the cheeks.
